Tureen and cover in 'Arctic Scenery' pattern Long Caption: A tureen and cover in 'Arctic Scenery' pattern. It is made of earthenware, transfer-printed in blue with a scene of Europeans carrying a canoe and pulling small loads on sledges across a frozen lake, with icebergs in the background. This is based on an engraving by Edward Finden after Lt George Back entitled 'Expedition passing through Point Lake on the ice June 25 1811' from John Franklin's 'Journey to the shores of the Polar Sea in 1819-20-21-22' (London, 1824). There is a border of alternate panels of flowers, animals and birds. The cover is similarly decorated with flowers, cheetahs and humming birds. Another narrow border of animals and flowers is printed on the outside of the tureen. There are three similar tureens in the museum's collections AAA4315-AAA4317.
