About us
Royal Museums Greenwich Images is the world's greatest source of historical maritime images and home to collections covering exploration, navigation, fine art, time, war, space and astronomy. We licence high-resolution images from the Royal Museums Greenwich collections, which includes the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the Queen’s House and Cutty Sark. Items in the collection include oil paintings, prints and drawings, maps and charts, scientific instruments, ship plans, historic photographs, film and drone footage, manuscripts, ship models, antiquities and uniforms.
This website is designed primarily for image research and licensing. Registration is free and recommended. It allows you to browse our collections, save and share lightboxes and apply and pay for licences online.
There are approximately 45,000 images on the website, and we add to the archive regularly. If you cannot find an image or specific subject matter, please do email us at images@rmg.co.uk and we will be happy to assist you with your research. We can provide high-quality digitisation services by our professional photographic studio of material which has not been previously available. Please contact us at images@rmg.co.uk to discuss your requirements.
All proceeds that Royal Museums Greenwich Images generates help to fund and support the museum's core activities and its social purpose. We ensure free access to our collections which supports conservation, research, acquisitions, education and exhibitions programmes.
Royal Museums Greenwich Images is a member of the British Association of Picture Libraries and Agencies (BAPLA), the Museum Intellectual Property Network, (MIPN), Coordination of European Picture Agencies Stock, Press and Heritage (CEPIC) and the Association of Cultural Enterprises (ACE).
Royal Museums Greenwich is the group name for the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, the Queen’s House and Cutty Sark. For legal purposes, the National Maritime Museum entity incorporates the group and its sites.
