Full dress coat - tail badge, Civil court dress: 1837 Long Caption: Civil Court Dress coat belonging to Sir John Franklin. Double breasted tailcoat of blue wool with 10 silver buttons arranged in pairs. The buttons have the following pattern: raised flat border, at the centre a crown circled by sprigs of laurel leaves on a lined ground. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and terminate in a mariner's cuff. The cuff is of red wool, embroidered in silver with a stripe above of acorns and oak leaves. The slash is of blue wool heavily embroidered with acorns and oak leaves and has three small silver buttons of the above pattern. The stand up collar is embroidered with acorns and oak leaves and fastens with three hooks and eyes. All the embroidery is done with silver thread, sequins, plate and purl. On each shoulder are four eyelets for epaulettes and on the left breast are two eyelets for orders. Credit line: On loan to the National Maritime Museum, from the Hopton Hall Derbyshire Collection.
