Belt plate - Royal Marines uniform: pattern 1827 Long Caption: Rectangular shoulder belt plate, the back of which has applied fasteners of a two hooks above two studs. The front is gilt and features a central motif of a crowned lion statant guardant above a crown, above a scroll with the inscription GIBRALTAR bordered by husk flowers. Below is another scroll with the inscription PER MARE PER TERAM also bordered by husk flowers. All three applied elements are secured to the belt plate by means of small wire eyes which fasten into the plate and are secured to the back by long wire pins. In this way they could easily be removed for re-gilding and cleaning.
