Beaches and harbour, Normandy 1944Long Caption:Freedman worked as a signwriter and a stonemason's and architect's assistant before studying art. Between 1930 and 1940 he was instructor in still life at the Royal College of art and, from 1940-46, he served as an official war artist while a captain in the Royal Marines. Although a figurative artist he is best known for his revival of colour lithography and book illustration.
