Bell from the yacht 'Fox' (1855) Long Caption: The brass ship's bell from the yacht 'Fox' (1855), later converted in 1857 for Arctic service looking for evidence of the fate of Sir John Franklin's 1845 North West Passage Expedition under the command of Captain Francis Leopold McClintock (1819-1907). The bell has a handbell-type argent, mouldings but no wires and is secured to a bronze headstock. It has a fitted pivot. There is no clapper in the bell. The name 'FOX' is engraved in sunken lettering with the Sutton crest of a red wolf's head above. The 'Fox' had been built by Hall & Co of Aberdeen for Sir Richard Sutton. It was sold to Lady Jane Franklin after his death.
