Shipping in the River Tawe, Swansea, including the 'General Sir William Nott' (1845) Long Caption: A waxed paper calotype negative. A view between the starboard quarter of an unidentified sailing ship and the bow of the 'Ellen Simson' (1841) towards the stern of the 'Gen Sir Wm Nott' (1845). The 'Gen Sir Wm Nott' is moored outboard a smaller schooner-rigged ship alongside the quay in the River Tawe, Swansea. The tide is partially in/out. In a letter dated 3 November 1846 to William Fox Talbot, Calvert Jones includes a list that mentions '136. Head and Bows, Ellen Simpson' [BL, LA46-123 ]. While this image is not that photograph, it is very similar and likely to be taken on the same day. Jones had arrived back in England from his European trip in early June 1846 to sort out the afffairs of his dead uncle.
