Sir Joseph Banks, (1743-1820) Long Caption: Banks, a wealthy young Lincolnshire landowner and already an amateur botanist of note, sailed with Captain Cook on his first Pacific voyage in the 'Endeavour',1768-1771, together with his own privately funded scientific 'suite', notably the botanist Daniel Solander and the artist Sydney Parkinson. The specimens and records he brought back were the foundation on which he built his subsequent career as influential royal adviser on scientific matters and long-term president of the Royal Society.
