'Nancy', broadside

F2887-1

'Nancy', broadside Long Caption: Scale: unknown. Model of the raft 'Nancy' as used during the Crimean War (1854-1855) made of wood and organic fittings stained and varnished in a dark brown colour apart from the wooden spars and casks underneath the main platform which are in natural wood. The model has been constructed from a series of circular wooden spars lashed together by rope in which are six rows of wooden casks, five in each row to provide buoyancy. On top is a planked wooden platform which has been edged and reinforced by diagonal beams. There are four vertical short wooden spars probably used for mooring and steering the raft. At the extreme ends of the raft are six thimbles lashed to the spars by rope grommets together with a small metal anchor and stock with a length of rope cable.
