Pink blossom on brown stem with gold backgroundLong Caption:A watercolour drawing on gold background by William Lionel Wyllie. A cluster of pale pink flowers (possibly Japanese cherry blossoms) are shown blossoming on a dark brown stem. The individual flowers are shown in different stages of bloom and also at different angles. The five white patches denote spaces left empty for flowers to be added to the composition at a later date. Both blossom and stem forms are encased in a dark outline, which creates a stronger contrast with the surrounding gold background. The linear treatment of forms and use of gold background indicates a strong influence of Japonisme.Credit line:National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, Caird Collection.Object:PAD0537Artist:William Lionel WyllieDate:late 19th to early 20th centuryMedium:watercolourSize:166 mm x 107 mm
