Ship off a lighthouse at night in a rough Long Caption: Although not titled or dated, this is probably a view of the Eddystone Lighthouse, off Plymouth and more specifically Robert Smeaton's stone tower of which the upper part now stands on Plymouth Hoe, following its replacement in the 1880s. As an illustration it is a late example in a 19th-century tradition that includes similar views by Turner, Stanfield and other artists. Constituted under a Royal Charter granted by Henry VIII in 1514, the Corporation of Trinity House is the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and Gibraltar. Today, the Corporation maintains seventy-two lighthouses, all of which are fully automated. The automated lighthouses are monitored and controlled from the Trinity House Operations Control Centre in Harwich, Essex. Credit line: © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London.
