Aquatint entitled, 'Whampoa pagoda' 1810 Long Caption: Whampoa pagoda was regarded by westerners as a symbol of China. It was visible along the Pearl River up to Whampoa and became a familiar sight to all Westerners who traded with China. It has nine stories and was most probably used as a watchtower.
