The obverse side of the medal bears a portrait bust of Captain Cook with the legend 'Iac. Cook Oceani Investigator Acerrlmus. ', translated as 'the most intrepid investigator of the seas', with 'Reg . Soc . Lon . Socio . Suo.' in exergue. The reverse shows Fortune as a standing draped female figure, with the legend 'Nil Intentatum Nostri Liquere', translating as 'our men have left nothing unattempted', with 'Auspiciis Georgii III' in exergue.
