Deck plan of the 'Adventure' (purchased 1771) Long Caption: Admiralty Sheer Draught Ship Plans. Built as a whitby collier named "The Marquis of Rockingham" and purchased by the Admiralty in November 1771. It was originally proposed to rename her "Raleigh" but in view of the offence this might cause the Spaniards, her name was changed to "Adventure". Under the command of Tobias Furneaux, she accompanied James Cook in "Resolution"on his second voyage in 1772. Between 8 February to 19 May 1773, she became separated from the other ship and her commander explored the coast of Tasmania. After a rendezvous in New Zealand, the ships became separated again on 22 October, and on 14 July 1774, "Adventure " returned home. In 1780 the navy converted her to a fireship and sold her in 1783.
