Universal equinoctial ring dial

F2104-1

Universal equinoctial ring dial Long Caption: Universal equinoctial ring dial for latitudes 0°-90° north. The dial is for northern latitudes only and the latitude is indicated by a central line on the bracket. The degree scale on the meridian ring is divided clockwise [0°]-[90°] and the remainder of the obverse side carries a table of latitudes which is continued on the reverse. There is a date scale but no zodiac or declination scale and the equinoxes are marked at 20 March and 20 September. There is an intricate acanthus decoration on the equinoctial ring stops, bridge pivots and bridge ends. The placement of Lyon in the table of latitudes, which interrupts the generally alphabetical list of (mostly) French towns, might suggest that the original owner was from this city. It is signed 'Butterfield AParis' on the obverse side of the meridian ring.
