Obverse of Gunter quadrant

F1284-2

Obverse of Gunter quadrant Long Caption: This is a horary quadrant marked with Gunter scales. On the reverse, the loss of the rotating disc allows a rare view of trial engraving in a space that was intended to be covered. Various numbers and letters appear, as does the date 1640 (twice), the word 'WENSDAY' and a depiction of a rabbit or hare. This is probably evidence of the maker practicing before he starts marking out the scales. On either side of the dial are two small tables. The left-hand one is a type of 'Capuchin Dial', so called because of its similarity to the shape of the Capuchin monk's hood.
