Greenwich Hospital - The Chapel burning, 2 January 1779

PZ1597

Greenwich Hospital - The Chapel burning, 2 January 1779 Long Caption: This somewhat crude but dramatic coloured print records the near-catastrophic fire that destroyed the original interior of Thomas Ripley's Chapel in the Queen Mary Court (1735-1751) of Greenwich Hospital and severely damaged the dome over its vestibule. The Reverend Thomas Furbor, who seems to have been the artist, was at this time the headmaster of the Greenwich Hospital School, although whether he issued the print for commercial reasons or moral ones - as a dreadful warning - is unrecorded.
