'Lecture-Hall of the Greenwich Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge' Long Caption: Longitudinal interior view of a large rectangular lecture hall which was opened on Wednesday, 15 February 1843. The speaker's table and entry door are shown to the right, the former under a bust of Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam, high in the centre of the long wall with the legend 'Knowledge is Power' (Bacon, 'Of Heresies', 1597), and below a curious piece of furniture of uncertain purpose behind the speaker.
