A Captain's Naval Gold Medal for The Battle of Cape St. Vincent 1797 Long Caption: This Captain's Naval Gold Medal was awarded to Cuthbert Collingwood (1750-1810) for the battle of Cape St Vincent. Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. The reverse is inscribed within a wreath of oak and laurel: 'CUTHBERT COLLINGWOOD ESQUIRE CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. THE EXCELLENT ON THE 14TH FEB. MDCCXCVII. THE SPANISH FLEET DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a gold rim with a watch glass on both sides to protect the surface. It has a loop and a ring for suspension.
