'Royal Sovereign'; warship; 100 guns; 1st rate Long Caption: Scale: Unknown. A model of the Royal Naval warship 'Royal Sovereign' made in plaster with wood, metal, paper, and cotton fittings, which has been realistically painted. The model depicts the vessel at 13.40 on 21 October 1805 at the height of the Battle of Trafalgar and shows the damage to the ship sustained in the action. The ship is three masted, ship rigged. The sails on the foremast and the foresail show shot damage. A union flag and a signal is flying from a halliard on the foremast. The lower main mast and its yard are in tact, but the rest of the mast is missing. The mizzen mast is completely missing apart from its lower mast. The bowsprit, jib, boom and dolphin striker are complete but the rigging is damaged and a union flag is misplaced. The figurehead is missing and dark grey smoke is shown billowing from the main deck. The hull is painted black with white stripes along the gun decks, white on the deck, and black on the deck fittings. On a paper label '34'. Another union flag is lying on the main deck.
