Thames Peter boat

L3530-008

Thames Peter boat Long Caption: Professionally made wooden planked model of a clinker-built Thames Peter boat, with unrigged mast, sprit and sail rolled around them: scale 1:12 approx. It was received missing its original rudder and related fittings, and fish-well cover, and with some damage to deck and coaming. The model represents the decked, larger type of Peter boat of about 26 feet in length, used from the Pool of London down to the Thames estuary and particularly associated with the Greenwich fishery. None of these once common craft survive and this is the only known contemporary model of one. It is also the only known surviving boat model from the substantial studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA (1793-1867), in whose marine work they figure, as well as that of Turner and many other 18th and 19th century artists: (Bagshawe Collection, acq. 9.04).
