The Island of Goeree

PW5547

The Island of Goeree Long Caption: De Jong was a publisher and engraver active in Rotterdam between 1779 and circa 1802. He worked from his own drawings as well as those of other artists. This drawing was engraved by Matthias de Sallieth as part of a set of prints of Dutch seaports based on similar designs by de Jong (there is a set of these in the museum's print collection). It shows Dutch shipping in stormy conditions off the island of Goeree in the south of Holland close to the Hook of Holland. It is now joined to the island of Overflakkee to form one large island.
