HMS 'Vulcan' (1889) Long Caption: Scale: 1:48. A half block model of HMS 'Vulcan' (1889), a torpedo depot ship made entirely of wood with metal fittings, constructed in bread and butter fashion and gouged out internally. The hull is painted a coppery-brown below the waterline with the upperworks and bulwarks painted black and divided by a thin white line along the waterline. There are a number of features carved in to the black part of the hull including portholes, loading doors and apertures. There is a rudder and a propeller shaft (not fitted or missing) fitted at the stern, a bilge keel amidships and a ram bow with a hawsepipe above. There is a single deck and a bridge deck finished in naturally wood and stained and varnished. Fittings and features include an anchor davit, bollards, a capstan, a conning tower and bridge, a binnacle, a pair of stump masts with derricks, a pair of funnels painted a light yellowy-brown, various rectangular and circular deck fittings all painted grey. On the bridge deck and overarching the stern are a series of metal boat chocks on which the torpedo boats would have been stored, whilst between the aft funnel and mizzen mast is a half model of a torpedo boat mounted on its chocks and painted a creamy-white. The model is mounted on a wooden backboard painted creamy-white, with a stained and varnished mahogany edging.
