'Sophie' (1798) Long Caption: Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of 'Sophie' (1798), a French 14-gun 6th rate sloop. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood (?) and is painted a chocolate brown colour with black topsides to the level of the gundeck, separated by a thin white line along the waterline. It has a curved sheer with the bulwarks painted a creamy white colour with a black capping, and pieced with 10 gunports. The bow is complete with headrails just aft of the figurehead (missing) whilst the stern gallery is flat and at the same angle as the rudder and sternpost below. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white colour surrounded by a stained moulded edging. There is a detached plaque which is inscribed "114 Sophie 14 French, 1798 A privateer captured in 1798 and added to the Royal Navy. Not mentioned after 1807 Dimensions: - Gun deck 108ft 8in Beam 28ft 11in".
