HMS 'Highflyer' (1851) Long Caption: Scale: 1:48. A model of the starboard side of HMS 'Highflier' (1851), a 21-gun steam frigate.,made entirely in wood and painted in realistic colours. The hull below the waterline is painted brown with a narrow cream stripe above, and black above the waterline. There is abroad white stripes running horizontally beneath the gundeck and the single deck is painted a uniform cream. The port quarter and stern galleries are shown. Fittings include port, main and mizzen stumpmasts, two hawseholes, cathead, open gunports, a retracting funnel, and a stump bowsprit. There is an aperture in the backboard indicating a propeller cavity. The model is displayed on a cream backboard with a stained bevelled edge. On backboard "H.M.S Highflyer Guns 21 Tons 1161 Built 1851". Plaque inscribed "216. Highflyer, 21 guns, 1851. A screw corvette, built at Blackwall. Broken up in 1871. Dimensions: - Length 192ft. Beam 36ft. 5in. Speed 9 knots". Backboard inscribed "Built......1851".
