Italian merchant ensign (1848-1946) Long Caption: Italian merchant ensign (1848-1946) pattern. The ensign is made of wool bunting with a linen hoist. It is machine sewn with the central shield printed onto the fabric. A rope is attached to hoist the ensign. Design: three vertical stripes — green, white and red. On the centre stripe- a red shield with the white cross of the House of Savoy within a blue border.
