The Coalition fleet, under Hood, was invited into Toulon in August 1793 to protect the population against the Jacobins. The map shows the fortifications during the Jacobin siege. Napoleon achieved early fame by capturing fort l'Eguillette (labelled N on the plan), forcing the fleet to withdraw from both anchorages. They left in such haste that they failed to destroy many of the French ships in the Old Port.
