South view of Christ Church

PY6093

South view of Christ Church Long Caption: Inscribed 'South View of Christ Church, &c. from the Meadows' by James Basire after William Turner; original painting (made 1798-1799) in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. There are within the Herschel collection a number of prints by well established and respected artists and engravers of the day often though by no means always depicting a scene with some biographical relevance to the family. In this instance, the scene depicted is one showing the boats on the river behind Christ Church College, Oxford possibly relating to William James Herschel's time at Oxford in the 1880s.
