Greenwich Hospital from the West [with the Infirmary] Long Caption: A view along what is now College Walk, inside the West Gate of the Old Royal Naval College, but showing the gates in their original position close to the buildings, before the area of tenements behind the present Greenwich Pier was demolished and the Hospital boundary was pushed west, the gates being moved in 1850 to their present position (here just behind the viewer's right shoulder). To the right is James Athenian Stuart's Hospital Infirmary of 1764-1768, which after some adaptation and rebuilding became the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital in 1870, until it was closed in 1986 and converted in circa 1996-1998 as the Dreadnought Library of Greenwich University. The Hospital mews and brew house are unseen on the left, where a waterman converses with a seaman sitting on his sea-chest. In the centre urchins and dogs assault a one-legged Greenwich Pensioner and his wife and on the right another Pensioner apparently with a supply of drink is trading some to another.
