Portrait of the 'Royal Sovereign'

PY1910

Portrait of the 'Royal Sovereign' Long Caption: This drawing depicts the 'Royal Sovereign'. It is one of four drawings of the vessel at her launching. This work shows the vessel from before the starboard beam at her launching. Flagstaffs are in the place of masts. It has been rubbed on the back and is therefore probably an offset from a rapid but accurate original. It is, however, possible that it has had an offset taken from it, since it is executed in soft pencil, like PAH5022. Some strengthening in pen and brown ink has been added to the stern and taffrail by van de Velde the Younger. A little pencil has been added to the head and the waterline, as well as a badly-drawn ensign which has not been rubbed on the back. This ensign may have been drawn by a later hand.
