The Battle off Gravelines, 8 August 1588 Long Caption: Scale: [ca. 1:150 000 (bar)]. Cartographic Note: Ungraduated. Bar scale in English miles. Contents Note: Contains the coats of arms of Queen Elizabeth and Lord Howard. The prevailing wind direction is indicated next to the compass rose. The number 10 is in the lower right corner. These charts were based on Lord Howard's account of the Spanish Armada's attempt to invade England in 1588. This plate shows Howard's boats attacking a stranded Spanish galleass, under fire from Calais. Further north the main battle is taking place, then the Armada regroups and runs north. The threat of invasion is now over.
