'Kingston, and Port Royal from Windsor Farm' Long Caption: Jamaica was the largest single sugar producer among the West Indian islands. In 1670, there were already fifty-seven plantations on the island and by the beginning of the 18th century there were 124. Sir Alexander Grant, a plantation owner and trader, reported that despite such successful production, business in Jamaica was 'slow and dilatory', and that he had to use much 'perseverance and patience' in his trading there.
