[The English and Spanish fleets between Portland Bill and the Isle of Wight on 2 - 3 August 1588] Long Caption: Soon after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, in 1588, Petruccio Ubaldini wrote a brief account of the campaign and battle. Illustrations were made to accompany Ubaldini's history and Robert Adams (c.1540-95) produced 11 charts or maps representing the several actions between the Armada and English fleet. This plate illustrates the continuation of the battle off Portland Bill and takes the story forward to 3 August, when the English fleet was re-formed into four squadrons. Hand coloured engraving. Scale: circa 1:300,000 (bar). Ungraduated chart of the track of the Spanish Armada. The bar scale is in English miles. The chart contains the coats of arms of Queen Elizabeth and Lord Howard. The prevailing wind direction is indicated next to the compass rose.
