Marine chronometer from Franklin's North-West Passage expedition

L0242-002

Marine chronometer from Franklin's North-West Passage expedition Long Caption: 8-day movement, Arnold spring-detent escapement and later balance. Mounted in original bowl, to which carrying handle and four ball feet have been added, converting it into a travelling timepiece. Engraved silvered brass dial, showing signs of alterations to signature in 'Arnold' region. This is one of a number of items recovered from the Franklin expedition searches which were not handed in by expedition members and, probably illegally, sold on return to England, where there was huge interest in the tragedy of Franklin's loss. It was purchased and presented by the Friends of the Museum in 1987, after it reappeared on the market.
