Meat sample from Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-1848 Long Caption: A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-1848. A sample of tinned meat preserved in spirit in a rectangular glass container mounted on a mahogany base with a brass plate fixed to the front. The brass plate is inscribed 'TINNED MEAT SUPPLIED TO THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITION 1845. FOUND BY RESCUE PARTY ON A SLEDGE. TIN OPENED-APRIL 1926'. The item was previously in the collections of the Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich. The tin was opened in 1926 by the Liverpool City Bacteriologist's Laboratory.
