Dowel Long Caption: An unidentified relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-1848 recovered by the Schwatka Search Expedition 1878-1879. A mahogany dowel, square in section with a wedge shaped end clad in brass. It is marked with the Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich number (2). The expedition accounts mention 'a few trifling relics' obtained at Hayes River but do not specify in detail. Schwatka was at this Inuit encampment from 15-17 May 1879.
