Hilt of swordLong Caption:Straight stirrup hilted sword, said to have belonged to Vice-Admiral Sir Samuel Hood (1762-1814), although this thought to be dubious as Vice-Admiral Hood died in 1814 and this pattern sword was not introduced until 1825. The hilt consists of a straight stirrup guard with lion's-mask back-piece and polished ivory grip bound with three gilt wires. The langets are engraved with foul anchor.Credit line:On loan to the National Maritime Museum, from the Ackland Hood FamilyObject:WPN1546Artist:ProsserDate:1825Medium:gilt wire; gilt; leather; metal-gilt; ivory; damascened steelSize:743 mm x 25 mm
