Lloyds Patriotic Fund £50 Presentation Sword Long Caption: Lloyds Patriotic Fund £50 presentation sword to Lieutenant Robert Fowler active 1793-1846. The hilt consists of a gilt metal pommel and back-piece in the form of lion's skin and a diamond-knurled ivory grip. Regarding the quillon a Roman fascis guard meets this at right angles in the form of Hercules' club, a snake entwined about it, attached to a loop in the lion's mouth. The polished steel blade, has been blued, and has gilt decoration. There is a swordknot and sword belt. The inscription on the blade reads 'From the Patriotic Fund at Lloyds to Lieunt. Robt. Fowler of the Royal Navy for his voluntary and zealous services on the 15th Feby 1804 when the Fleet of the HEICo Merchant Ships in their passage from China defeated and pursued a squadron of French men of war commanded by Adl Linois in the Marengo of 84 guns recorded in the London Gazte of the 11th August'.
