Hunting dagger

E1539

Hunting dagger Long Caption: Hunting dagger. The hilt is curved, with a tapered (to the guard) dark brown horn grip of roughly oval section. The brass pommel cap is oval in plain and slightly beaked at the front, with a domed end, surmounted by a prominent tang button, and chamfered 'neck' decorated by a pair of engraved threads. As there are no markings of any service nature about this weapon it is assumed to be civilian. Nevertheless, it is of the form often used at sea and for this reason it is included in the main catalogue. It is probably not British but may be French or German. The mounts of the hilt are quite finely wrought.
