A Venetian pilgrim ship in an Italian port

BHC0929

A Venetian pilgrim ship in an Italian port Long Caption: A fantasy or capriccio view showing various features of a southern Italian port in an antique Mediterranean atmosphere. It may be based on the Ripa Grande, which was Rome's main river port, abandoned in the 19th century, and which stood on both sides of the Tiber. There is an emphasis on trade in the painting. At the end of the 17th century, many Dutch artists turned away from the styles and subjects of their home country. Storck was one of several marine painters who produced views of Mediterranean ports which were probably fantastical since there is not evidence that he went there.
